Freshwater Angling

Trout (Rainbow & Brown)

Open Season September 1 until June 30.
Harvey Dam is classified as closed waters and is closed to fishing from July 1 – August 31 each year. Logue Brook Dam/ Lake Brockman is open all year for fishing. The Harvey Dam is re-stocked annually with trout.
Artificial lures and live bait are permitted.
Bag and Size Limits.
Daily mixed species bag limit per licenced angler.
 You may take four fish (combined) of the following species:
Rainbow Trout.
Brown Trout and
Freshwater cobbler.
“Daily” means from midnight to midnight.
Minimum Size.
Trout, rainbow & brown: 300mm
Other species: no size limit.
Fish smaller than the minimum size must be gently returned to the water immediately.
There is no bag or size limits for other freshwater fish.  As redfin perch are a feral species, please do not return them to the water as they prey on juvenile marron and native freshwater fish.
Please note: Redfin perch and trout cannot be fished for during the closed season (1 July-31 August).
All fishing may be subject to surveillance by Fisheries and Marine Officers. Any breaking of recreational fishing rules may incur an infringement notice or legal action taken against you.

Locations:

Harvey Dam – Rear of Dam Only. Weir Road, Harvey (Off the South Western Highway)
Logue Brook Dam (Lake Brockman) – Entire Dam. Logue Brook Dam Road, Cookernup (Off South Western Highway). Fishing is available all year round at Logue Brook Dam/Lake Brockman.

 Fishing licences
A Freshwater Angling Licence is required for all freshwater angling in waters south of Greenough (29 degrees south) and above the tidal influence, including all lakes, dams, rivers and their tributaries. Fishers wishing to fish for marron need a specific licence. You can apply for a new licence or renew an existing licence online at the Dept of Fisheries website, www.fish.wa.gov.au . Alternatively application forms are available from Dept of Fisheries offices.

A Freshwater Angling Licence permits the use of a fishing rod and line or a hand-held line only. Only one line may be used at any time.. The use of lures and bait are permitted.

Beach Fishing

Locations:

Myalup Beach
Summer months (December – April) are best for beach fishing. Common varieties caught are Silver bream (all year), Tailor, Yellowfin & King George whiting, Garfish, Australian herring, Flounder,  Mulloway, Salmon (March through to Winter) and Flathead.

Binningup Beach
A reef that runs parallel to the beach makes it an excellent fishing beach. Common varieties caught are Silver bream (all year), Tailor, Flathead, Flounder, Garfish, Australian Herring, Small Shark, Mulloway, Salmon (March through to Winter), Whiting (King George and Yellowfin whiting).

Paradise Beach (Pamelup)
(North of Myalup Beach)

Buffalo Beach
(Off Old Coast Road, on Buffalo Road)

Day use area, fishing and swimming, 4WD access to beach, toilets and parking. Dogs allowed on a leash.

Belvidere Beach
(Off Old Coast Road, onto Buffalo Beach – south)
Fishing, swimming and day use area. 4WD access to beach, toilets and parking. Dogs allowed on a leash.

The Cut (Australind)
Situated west of Point Douro access off Buffalo Road. Boat and hiking access only. This is the start of the 9km Harris Track which stretches north to Belvidere. The Walking track winds through Tuart and Peppermint woodlands along Australind’s coast overlooking the Indian Ocean. Harris Track features kangaroos, lizards and an abundance of birds including Carnaby’s black cockatoo, pelicans, cormorants, swans and the black shouldered kite.

Fishing is also a huge draw card at this point. 11 tent-based campsites, including two for large groups. Each site features a secluded area for tents, a fire ring, wood BBQ and picnic table. This is an island-like atmosphere with shelters and fish cleaning table. Fishing spots along the groyne can be easily reached via footpaths leading from picnic site. The beach is only 500m away.

Bottlenose Dolphins lounge around at the mouth of The Cut waiting for their feed coming from the river flow. Dolphins are a rugular sight in this area.
